Afrika Bambaataa, Dj:n som enligt många står som en av grundarna till hiphop i 70-talets Bronx, New York, kommenterar nu en av musikkulturens största tragedier.
I en ny intervju med amerikanska Vlad TV tittar Bambaataa tillbaka på tiden när både Tupac Shakur och Notorious B.I.G. var i livet. Han säger sig minnas de båda rivalernas påverkan på Universal Zulu Nation, den numera internationella organisationen han grundade för att främja hiphopkulturen för ungdomar.
Afrika Bambaataa, som egentligen heter Kevin Donovan, berättar i intervjun om hur Biggie redan innan han blev signad, spelade live på organisationens jubileumskonsert. Det, medan Tupac inte sågs som en medlem, men som ”en i familjen” och att rapparnas fejd, med dödlig utgång, kunde ha undvikits. Bambaataa säger:
“He was family with us. Tupac was coming out of New York City and went to the West Coast…I met him here and there, but I didn’t know him like really to be hanging out with him and all that. Passing by, just like N.W.A and a couple of others. We knew Biggie, we used to have him at the anniversary when he used to come tear the house up before he had any type of record deal…Yes, that could have been avoided. When people used to be arguing over the West Coast versus the East Coast, Universal Zulu Nation, we never had that problem”
