Senast Drake släppte ett mixtape var den 13:e februari 2015, då ”If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” kom helt utan förvarning. Mixtapet slog Spotifys streamingrekord med 17,3 miljoner lyssningar bara på de tre första dagarna, och gjorde Drake till den första rapparen någonsin att toppa Bilboard Top Artist 100. 2009 blev Drizzy även nominerad till en Grammis för låten ”Best I Ever Had” från sitt första mixtape ”So Far Gone”. Kort sagt brukar kombinationen Mixtape och Drake innebära succé.

Av den anledningen byggs höga förväntningar upp då Drake under sin spelning i Kansas City berättade för sin publik att ett nytt mixtape är på väg. Precis innan Toronto-rapparen gick av scenen berättade han nyheten:

“I want you all to protect yourself and everyone around you and spread love, spread good energy. Because you know what? What I saw tonight was a beautiful building of beautiful people from all races and all places. And I want you to protect yourselves and each other so when I go and work on this new mixtape and come back to Kansas City and I drop that shit, I wanna see everybody in this motherfucka, boy!”
