For years now the NBA 2K Franchise has continually been growing in terms of being the best basketball videogame out there and arguably the best sports video game there is. I remember when you guys brought Michael Jordan back in the game and even had the competition cancel their projects. When you find yourselves at that level of domination, what pushes you to keep improving the game at this rate?
Rob Jones: Well obviously we have our good share of criticism every year as well. With being popular you also have to deal with your failures.  Every year we feel like we have a certain amount of things that we could do better, but ultimately we want to make the best basketball experience for not only the fans of the videogame but also the fans of the sport. We want them to feel that it is just like a real basketball game.  When I first started at 2k, I was working on 2K2 and I hated it, really. It was a good videogame at the time, but it was not basketball. It took me years to where I actually felt that we are scratching the surface of being a basketball game. Every year we have done something to come closer to being actual basketball and 2K16 is going to be one of the games that people will remember, but we are still trying to get closer and that is what pushes us every year.
What I think the game was missing the previous years was the explosiveness and the defensive capabilities of shutting a good player down completely. I am guessing that the fans love being able to dominate the game with players like with Kevin Durant or LeBron James?

Rob Jones: Offense sells the game, defense keeps you playing it. If you would try to play the AI, you will definitely notice a difference in this year’s game. I guarantee you that the game is way more defensive than it has ever been.
And the blocks? Will we be able to block a shot from the rim to the half court line DeAndre Jordan style?

Rob Jones: They’re there. Control of blocks was one of the things that I didn’t like much. It had a lot to do the fact that it didn’t respect my stick. It didn’t respect the types of block that I wanted to get. All of that got fixed this year and getting a block in this game is really satisfying.
I know that the game is going more towards a floor-spacing game where the “stretch fours” are given a huge role, what did you do to make sure that guys like LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMarcus Cousins do not get forgotten in the game?

Rob Jones: We simplified the controls a bit, we didn’t like the toggle button to post up so we switched it back to the left trigger like the old days. We also rebuilt the entire system to be a lot more fluid, to be quick and to be explosive.  So, the guys that you just mentioned will be able to dominate the game just like they do in real life and you will definitely not forget them.
How is team-chemistry affecting the team’s performances? Will it be shown and effect the way the team plays even if you only play a quick game online?

Rob Jones: Yes, chemistry is big in the game this year. It’s another one of those things that we worked on this year’s game. It’s going to be important for teams to have chemistry to be effective.

MyCareer and your own player, the game mode where you follow your own created player going through the struggle of becoming a successful NBA player. Was MyCareer one of your main focuses this year to due to its popularity?

Rob Jones: It was, personally I find it strange that we’ve been telling three years of story where you are always struggling. You always start as a player who is struggling, but I think that this year we are hitting a level where you are going to care more about that struggle as you go through and that’s why we enlisted Spike (Lee) to help get that feeling that you have from working so hard. We did want it to be just cutscene – grind – grind –grind – cutscene. We wanted to have some emotion in there.
With shooters becoming better than ever, will we see guys like Patrick Beverley play tough defense on the better perimeter players?

Rob Jones: You will see that defensive settings are a lot more improved this year. The AI will automatically set the matchups for you, but you are able to adjust everything yourself. You can set the players like Patrick Beverley to fully deny, and make it really impossible for shooters to get a open shot or even catch the ball.  If you for example play against the Cavaliers, every player will put a lot of pressure and really smother your players. But if you watch how they’ve been playing throughout the playoffs that is exactly how they play.
